I will be playing my first official gig in The Netherlands in around 2 weeks time… Friday the 23rd of May to be precise… so I thought I’d say a few words about that today.
The last gig I played was in November, in Prague, so I am a tad nervous. But this is a short one, 3 songs as an opening act on a Friday evening. The challenge is, I now have to select WHICH 3 songs to play… its giving me headaches. I suspect I will rehearse all my material and choose 3 the day before.
I have to counterbalance my personal favourites against the understanding that it won’t be very quiet, it needs to be up-tempo I think and well, I am just indecisive about it!
The gig is being thrown my Manage Your Art (MYA) in Amsterdam. The head honcho there, Annelies, has been incredibly helpful and cool to me since I got here in Amsterdam and I am very glad to be playing the show. It is being party organized by some of her students at InHolland where they are studying music management, events and other damn cool things.
The other thing is, is that the main act is EJ Von Lyric from South Africa…. Many may not know her, but EJ was part of the hugely successful Hip-Hop outfit Godessa and has toured Europe extensively… basically, she is an established name, a pro and a fellow South African. No pressure hey?
It is also a networking session for freelancers and features… a braai! Heheheh! Good thing I am no longer a vegetarian. Here are ALLL the details. If you are in Amsterdam, it would be great to see you there!
MYA is Proud To Announce:
South African Flavours at ZZP
Friday 23 May a unique music and food event kicks off at ZZPlace in Eerste Oosterparkstraat, Amsterdam. Beginning with an after work ‘Borrel’ type meet up for free-lancers, there will be live music, unique food, drink and plenty of opportunity to network.
Brought to you by MYA in collaboration with Rookie students from Inholland, the event includes well known South African songstress EJ von Lyric performing live and unplugged as a warm up show to her Netherlands tour. EJ has toured the Netherlands before and is no stranger to the Dutch music fan. EJ has been working her music since 1997 and is a well-established international tourist and a regular on the South African festival circuit.
The opening act will be another South African, poet and song-writer David Chislett who recently moved to these shores. Well known Amsterdam voice Jan Kin will also make an appearance playing his own unique selection of live music.
Don’t be shy to bring your own instrument along as there will be an open jam once the performances are over.
To add flavour to the event ZZPlace is also hosting a South African style braai (barbecue) with real Boerewors, pap and Chakalaka. Only €5 gets you some authentic South African fare and you can try out cider, beer, wine and rooibos tea from below the equator at our cash bar.
