100 000 poets for Change: This Saturday 29 September

posted in: Blog, News 0

Initiated last year by US poet Michael Rothenberg, the 100 000 Poets For Change event virtually hosts numerous poetry readings and performances throughout the world on the same day, thereby creating a show of solidarity in sharing the view of poetry as a mode of protest and/or bringing about change.

You can read more about the international 100 000 Poets for Change event at www.bigbridge.org

The South African leg of this global event takes place on Saturday 29 September at Picobella’s in 4th Avenue Melville from 4pm til 7pm.

The Line-up
Along with 10 other poets, I will performing a ten minute reading from my book For Your Or Someone Like You as a representative for South Africa in this showcase. I will be selecting poems that relate to the notions of struggle and rebellion in particular, which admittedly are not the ones I have performed at any recent shows or gigs I have played. It will be good to air some different work.

The Line up is as follows:
Opening: Gary Cummiskey
Michelle McGrane
Khulile Nxumalo
Hans Pienaar
Gerard Rudolf
Rene Bohnen
Phillippa Yaa de Villiers
Arja Salafranca
Alan Finlay
Gary Cummiskey
Corné Coetzee
David Chislett

A Show Of Force
Everyone always talks about poetry being important and valid in the modern world. But publishers shun the art form as being unviable and unsaleable. If you believe the former, it would be great is you could demonstrate your support by coming to check out 11 of Joburg’s poets in action. We represent but a tiny percentage of what is out there, but I know there will be others in the crow don the night.

From a spectator point of view this is a great smorgasbord of short performance within a designated time frame. We WILL be done by 7pm I am told, so the rest of your Saturday night awaits afterwards!

Come and say hello.
We’ll all have books on sale as well and I am sure everyone will be happy to personalise them for you if you’re buying
See you Saturday!
