Start Smart Hits Cape Town

Author David Chislett brings his music industry workshops to Cape Town on 20 October with the first Start Smart Business Basics of the music industry workshop at the Mercury Lounge at 6pm on Thursday 21 October 2010.

The Business Basics Start Smart workshop is designed to give artists, managers and promoters a solid background in the basic business ideas and structure that lie behind the industry. In a close knit group, the workshop takes the form of a segmented presentation with tasks and a Q&A session designed to direct information where the participants most need it.

The workshop follows on the day after the formal Cape Town launch of Chislett’s music industry text book, “1,2,1,2: A Step By Step Guide To The SA Music Industry” and admission is only R20.00. The book will also be on sale at R200.00 exclusively for workshop participants.

In a unique special offer ,workshop participants will also be able to buy tickets for the Hog Hoggidy Hog and Fuzigish show at the upstairs venue on Friday night at a much discounted rate.

These events also form part of the Mercury’s on-going birthday celebrations during October. “For us, this is a great way to give something back to the community of musicians and promoters that do business with Mercury,” said venue owner Kevin Winder, “Often there is not much we as club owner can do to improve the lot of artists, but this information should really help the artists up their game.”

The workshop is 3-hours long and provides an intensive look at the business basics, while passing on handy tips and hints from 20 years of music industry experience. “I decided to write the book and start the workshops when I realised how much of what I know I had learned the hard way,” remarked Chislett, “It is my hope that this process will help others waste less time as they get where they are going.”

The Business Basics workshop is part of a series of presentations known as the Start Smart series. Others so far include Planning for Success and The Digital Music World. For more information, visit or email

Will you be the facilitator of this particular workshop in Cape Town?
I would love to attend and get a crystal clear idea of how your workshops are run and how you’ll be able to articulate and squeeze the information within 3HOURS!!!!!
