Start Smart Returns to the Downtown Music Hub

Downtown Music Hub is proud to announce a repeat of the Business of Music Workshop.

Johannesburg: Due to the overwhelming success of the First Start Smart Business of Music Workshop, The Downtown Music Hub is proud to announce a repeat of this workshop to be hosted at the legendary recording studios on Saturday 5 November 2011.

The Business of Music workshop was so well received and so many people turned away due to lack of capacity that the decision has been made to offer the workshop again. This workshop is part of the Start Smart series of workshops presented by author and industry professional David Chislett. It covers the basic principles all artists need to know about in the business of the music industry in order to maximise their careers.

“We were very pleased with the overwhelming response to the workshop and for all those people who could not make it, we are happy to be offering it once again.” remarked Chola Makgamathe, CEO of the Downtown Music Hub, “the response post the workshop also indicates that there is a great need for this type of skills development and transfer in the market and it fits within our mandate and we are exploring offering similar workshops that will deal with other relevant topics in 2012.”

The workshop covers the basic principles of the general agreements and contracts an artist will come into contact with, the definition of intellectual property and the income streams associated with it. It also looks ate record deals, being an independent artist, management and booking agents as well as the fees and payments that go along with all of the above.

David Chislett published 1,2,1,2: A Step By Step Guide To The SA Music Industry in 2010 and has been travelling the country presenting workshops and facilitating skills and knowledge transfer around the book ever since. He has also presented workshops on behalf of Mmino and Moshito in the last 2 years. Chislett brings over 20 years of music industry experience to the table and shares many facts and processes that many artists are simply unaware of in this workshops.

There are only 40 places open on the workshop and admission, while free, is on a first come first served basis. Musicians or artist manager wishing to attend must contact Zwai at the Downtown Music Hub on either: info@dtmh.co.za or on 011 334 7230. Late comers will not be admitted to the session

David Chislett’s book, 1,2,1,2: A Step By Step Guide To The SA Music Industry will be in sale at a Downtown Music Hub special price on the day of only R150.00
